This production was the first live performance I worked on as Scenic Supervisor. Set in the 1940s, originally written by Emile Zola, it follows the story of Therese, who lives a bland life in a Haberdashery with her Aunt and her cousin/ husband Camille. The story turns when she meets Laurent, an old friend of her husband’s, it explores themes of passion, dependence and delusion.

Working as Scenic Supervisor was a very exciting and new experience for me, Katie Evans (set designer) and I worked very closely together to make her design come to life. I learnt so many things during this project, such as, exploring many new scenic art techniques, time management, working with a team and communication. I leant the importance of communication within a live performance making sure to touch base with all sectors of the production team and keeping everyone updated on your own process.

The set design included a raked wooden floor which was at a slight angle, it had three fabric walls on the back, left and right of the stage which were made of Sharks-tooth Gauze and dyed to create the desired effect. They could be lifted up and down like curtains for each scene, the fabric has sewing lines on which we hand stitched with packing string (this was a lengthy task). The set also included many pipes emerging from the floor, painted rusted copper and many other details which you can see in the images.
